Celebrating Failure

1) Tell us about a time this past semester that you failed -- whether in this class, or outside of this class. Don't spare any details! It'd be even better if there was something you tried several times this semester, and failed each time.
This past semester I have applied to many summer internships online and I attended the internship fair for my college. Since this is my Junior year, I was hoping to get an internship to gain more experience in the field that I wish to pursue. However, many of the internships that I applied to never contacted me back or I was denied an interview. For the few that I did interview for ended up getting canceled due to the corona virus. Although the cancellations were unavoidable, I will still consider it a failure because I ultimately wasn't able to get the internship.
2) Tell us what you learned from it.
I learned that I shouldn't get discouraged every time I fail. Failing is all a part of learning and I know that I should embrace it rather than get discouraged by it. Although it hurts and failing can make you question your abilities, it can help you understand where you were lacking and help you grow professionally.

3) Reflect, in general, on what you think about failure. Failure is hard, isn't it? It's embarrassing, sure, but it also means that we have to change something about ourselves. Talk about how you handle failure (emotionally, behaviorally). Finally, talk about how this class has changed your perspective on failure -- are you more likely to take a risk now than you were just a few months ago?
I deal with failure by just accepting it. There is nothing more that I could do once I fail so I always think its best to learn from it and move on. Because of this class, I had the opportunity to read How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, which talks about how the author had failed so often but he learned from each failure and ended up being successful. Reading the book made me realize that you will live life with less regrets if you try everything that you wish to try, no matter the outcome. I do feel that I will take more risks now compared to a few months ago, knowing that a failure isn't the end all be all.

  1. Hi Mia,
I definitely am hard at myself at times as well too. Even Though I did not apply to internships this academic year, I have applied to multiple on campus jobs and many research positions as well. With that being said, even though I was discouraged and thought I’d never get a job I eventually did. This goes to show that good things do happen and you can’t lose hope.

  2. Hi Mia,
I can see that we have some of the same traits, I don't like to fail at anything even if it is not my fault. Unfortunately COVID-19 has really taken opportunities away from many students, anything from actual class, internships, and even graduation. It is horrible and I know that you feel that you have failed but in this instance the circumstances are beyond ANYONE's control. Hang in there! I know the right opportunity will present itself.

  3. Hi Mia, your post was very interesting. Just like you, I too believe that failing is an important part of the learning process. I too read the book How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, and it helped me a lot in dealing with failures and viewing failures with a different perspective. Also, accepting failures is one of the most least spoken of trait but is one of the most important ones in my opinion. Great post!

  4. These unprecedented times are a bit tough for a lot of us when it comes to jobs, internships, and progressing through something new. I agree with the advice of embracing the moment rather than facing discouragement. Once we overcome the global health crisis, I am sure all of these places will be able to give you another chance at the interview process. Best of luck to you
